Hardwood mulch is excellent for plant health as it naturally retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and decomposes to add vital organic nutrients back into the soil; however, it requires top-dressing every 1 to 2 years. Decorative rock is a lasting hardscape solution that offers a clean, modern aesthetic and won't wash or blow away, though it strictly requires a heavy-duty, commercial-grade woven weed barrier installed underneath.

Most standard, ground-level paver patios do not require permits. However, taller retaining walls generally require engineered plans and city approval.
